A Little Burnet History
|
In the mid-1800’s the area that is now Burnet was plagued by Indian raids as well as cattle theft. An outpost was created in 1847 by a company of Texas Rangers to help protect the settlers in the area. In 1849, the outpost was chosen to act as a federal fort and was named Fort Croghan. Eventually a post office and courthouse was built. The courthouse was named Burnet Courthouse after David G. Burnet, who served as the ad interim President of the Republic of Texas. In 1858 the town’s name (originally named Hamilton) was changed to Burnet. Both the county and city of Burnet are named after David G. Burnet. Today, Fort Croghan still stands as a museum and tourist attraction in the area.
